CHARACTER NAME: Princess Mi Amore Cadenza "Cadence"
SERIES: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
CANON POINT: Post-season 2
LOSS: Her cutie marks, or the butt pictures the ponies get when they discover their special talent. Cadence’s talent involves being able to spread love wherever she goes, so her cutie marks were of a crystal heart with a gold outlining.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER: Sadly at this point in the show, Cadence’s backstory hasn’t been fully developed just yet. That’s all stuff that’ll be developed in season 3, but there’s more than enough to work with:
Equestria plays home to many creatures of fantasy such as griffins and dragons, but is dominantly composed of ponies, who place high values on friendship, magic and all that jazz. They follow a monarchy that has places the sisters, Celestia and Luna, all the way at the tippy top. They serve as the princesses of day and night, respectively, and rule over Equestria equally.
But thanks to an extended family tree that isn’t really touched upon, there exists other ponies of nobility. The first one mentioned in the show is Prince Blueblood, but the less said about him, the better. The next, and significantly more important member of the extended family is Cadence, the princess of love and desire. Where exactly she rules hasn’t been truly touched upon as of yet, but she holds a significant voice in the Crystal Empire that’ll be explained more once Season 3 rolls in. Anyway, Cadence still kept herself involved in things in Equestria, spending time with aunt Celestia (Luna was sadly absent at the time because of the whole “banished to the moon” deal) and her prized pupil, Twilight Sparkle. Cadence was always fond of children and since Celestia couldn’t always look after the young unicorn thanks to royal duties, she offered to become her foal sitter.
Although Cadence is something of a child herself personality-wise, she was still knowledgeable enough to take responsibility over Twilight and look after her…not that it was a problem. The two of them bonded together so well, they practically became sisters. Not long after being introduced to Twilight did Cadence meet her older brother, Shining Armor. They became great friends and spent much of their time together with Twilight being the main excuse for them to meet. Of course, Cadence didn’t use Twilight that way; she still loved her very much. It just so happened that Shining was around most of the time and from all of those meetups, a romance bloomed.
It grew as the years moved on, even after Twilight didn’t need a foal sitter anymore and moved to Ponyville. At some point during the show (off camera, of course), Shining proposed to her, she agreed and they were to have their wedding take place in Canterlot, where they invited Twilight and all of her friends to plan the reception.
...But of course, this wouldn’t be so easy. The ruler of malicious creatures called changelings, Queen Chrysalis, saw the wedding as an opportunity to infiltrate Equestria and siphon away all of their love so she can feed her subject. I dunno how that works, but there’s a lot about MLP that doesn’t make sense, but that’s okay. She imprisoned Cadence in caverns beneath Canterlot and took her place. Sadly, Cadence couldn’t break free of her own volition and if it wasn’t for Twilight being imprisoned there as well, she wouldn’t have escaped.
Here, Cadence’s resolve is clearly illustrated as she strives to return to the surface and save Shining Armor from marrying an imposter, despite being worn ragged and possibly exhausted for being there for days. Unfortunately, revealing Chrysalis’ true form did little to interrupt her plans, but after regrouping with Shining and freeing him from Chrysalis’ mind control, their combined love and magic banished Chrysalis and her changelings from Equestria and they all proceed to have a beautiful and Disney-like wedding.
So it’s not a complete listing of her backstory, but what’s presented in canon shows plenty of information regarding Cadence. Despite being a fully grown mare, she held on to part of her childish personality and certainly isn’t afraid to let it show. She danced with Pinkie Pie and didn’t oppose the décor she chose even if it was more suited for a kid’s birthday party. Outside of that, Cadence remains very friendly towards others, though her experience with changelings has taught her to be more careful with whom she speaks to. Even while living in a world full of loving ponies, she still stands out as one of the more uniquely sweet and loving mares around. As a princess, she knows of proper conduct and how to act towards others, but to stay as loving and kind as she is shows how she doesn’t let her title get to her head, especially since she prefers that others call her Cadence instead of her full name.
While she’s not particularly fond of direct confrontations, she’ll still fight for what she believes in and most importantly, the ones she loves. It takes a lot to pick yourself up when you’ve hit rock bottom and everything’s crumbling around you, but when the time came to save Shining from the changeling queen and ultimately, Equestria, she charged right off to end it. The greatest problem from this ordeal wasn’t that Shining was going to marry someone else, but that the other person he was going to marry didn’t love him and didn’t plan to love him. All Chrysalis wanted was to use him for her own purposes; it was the thought of Shining marrying for reasons that excluded love that truly horrified her and kept her moving.
Also, as indicated by her title, Cadence has an incredible amount of faith in the power of love. This isn’t due to any bias as the princess of love, mind you; she truly believes that love is the greatest emotion and greatest force out there. Love can put an end to disputes, heal all wounds and bring people (and ponies) closer together. Most of her magic revolves around love and she’s known for literally spreading it wherever she goes, so if there’s a dispute going on, she’ll work her hardest to end it peacefully.
ABILITIES: Because she is a winged unicorn, Cadence receives benefits from being both a Pegasus and a unicorn. From the Pegasus side, she has the ability to manipulate weather as well as moving and standing on clouds and of course, flying. From the unicorn side, she has access to magic, which is mostly used for levitation since that makes up for them not having hands. As a winged unicorn, it’s implied that Cadence’s magic is more advanced than a typical unicorn’s, but it’s not really clarified in canon.
Though as noted earlier, Cadence’s greatest ability is being able to spread love. She’s able to do this thanks to the love magic she has access to, ranging from quelling arguments to making any two people fall in love each other. Or making one person fall in love with another. She makes love happen, okay? Okay. Also, she’s shown in canon to have supportive-type spells in her repertoire, particularly one that can free others from mind control and if the situation calls for it, use her magic to bolster others. She’s like the white mage.
THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE: Despite the changeling invasion that took advantage of the royal wedding in Canterlot, it was without a doubt one of the most memorable days in Cadence’s life. Of course, there was much to worry about and lament due to the impression the changelings left on all of Equestria, but that wasn’t why Cadence remembered it. She remembered it as the day she not only got reconnected with Twilight Sparkle, the unicorn she loved and cared for ever since she was small, but the day she became wedded to her true love, Shining Armor. It was thanks to their undying love for each other that they were able to do away with the changelings and save all of Equestria from their conquest.
Admittedly, she wasn’t sure she would be able to rescue Shining from marrying an imposter. Being imprisoned in the caves below Canterlot meant she had to watch helplessly as her life and what was meant to be her happiest day crumble to pieces. It was only thanks to Twilight’s efforts that they were both able to escape those caves and reveal the imposter. It wasn’t the way Cadence had hoped she would see the purple unicorn again, but given how much worse things could have been, she was thankful to see her at all. It was such a great surprise to see how much Twilight has grown since she was a foal; she became a strong leader with so many great friends by her side…Cadence owed all of them greatly for helping her have the most memorable wedding a pony could ask for.
She didn’t get to spend too much time with Twilight’s friends, but at least she managed to get to know them and how they came to be friends with Twilight. They’re such an incredibly varied cast of ponies, Cadence couldn’t help but be impressed. The purple unicorn she raised started off as a young little bookworm who loved studying and was nearly inseparable from her books. Now she was her own mare and Cadence couldn’t be any more proud of her.
Tears begin to form in her eyes as she looks back on those fond memories as she sits beside Shining in their carriage as it takes them away to their honeymoon. After everything this day dragged them through, put Cadence and Shining through, forced Twilight and her friends to get involved in, they all deserved a good, long rest. Not just the bride or the groom, all of them. It was thanks to their combined effort that the day could end on such a high note, so there was no reason not to give them the credit they deserve.
FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE:
Hello, everypony! This Valentine’s Day that’s coming up sure is causing a bit of fuss, isn’t it? It’s a holiday all about love and sharing it with others, including that special somepony. We have a holiday just like it in Equestria called Hearts and Hooves Day; it’s one of my favorites.
I know there are plenty of you who have feelings you want to confess to others, but are too shy to go through with them or know to convey them. I know a lot about love, so I’m more than happy to give you advice on how to tell your significant other how you really feel about them. There’s something of an art to it, but including your own style will definitely make it a memory to treasure. Remember: love isn’t exclusive to humans or ponies; love is universal.
INTENT: Mostly to try out the idea of playing a character who gets a happily ever after and see what happens afterwards. Also, spreading love everywhere has the potential to be awesome.
